How it works

Revenue needed = business expenses + after-tax income ÷ (1 − tax rate). Dividing by billable hours per week × working weeks gives the hourly rate. Only count hours clients actually pay for, and include editing time in them. Most photographers bill far fewer hours than they work, because marketing, admin, and travel are unpaid. Tax rules vary, so confirm the rate with an accountant. Example: To net $50,000 with $10,000 in expenses, charge about $106.48 an hour, or $76,666.67 in revenue per year.
