Field of View Calculator

Horizontal, vertical, and diagonal angle of view for a lens and sensor.

How it works

Angle of view = 2 × arctan(d ÷ 2f), where d is the sensor dimension and f is the focal length. The formula assumes the lens is focused at infinity. Focusing closer narrows the real angle slightly, especially on macro lenses. Full frame is 36 × 24 mm and APS-C is about 23.5 × 15.6 mm. Example: A 50 mm lens on a 36 × 24 mm sensor covers 39.6° horizontally, 27° vertically, and 46.8° diagonally.
