How it works
A crate should let the dog stand, turn around, and lie down without being roomy enough to soil one end. A common rule adds about 4 inches to the length from nose to base of tail and about 3 inches to the shoulder height. The standard crate lengths used here are 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, and 54 inches. For a growing puppy, buy a crate that fits the adult size and use a divider. Example: A dog that measures 28 inches long and 22 inches tall needs a crate at least 32 inches long, so a 36 inch crate fits.
